Een opmerkelijk negatief.
Het is een bijzonder negatief dat hier aandacht verdient
Een historisch onderdeel van de Nederlandse luchtvaart.
Om het te laten zien voor wat het is heb ik het, een beetje krom getrokken, tegen het raam aan gezet en gefotografeerd.
En daarna terug gebracht naar de originele negatief-grootte, n.l. 9 X 6 cm.

Er is een vliegtuig op te zien, dat is duidelijk.
Er is ook wel een idee te vormen over wat het is, vermoed ik, maar daarover later.
De fotograaf was een luchtvaart enthousiast, en vermoedelijk is de kist op de foto op afstand langs gevlogen,
anders was hij wel blijven fotograferen.
Hij deed dat met een recht-toe-recht-aan balgcamera. Dus ook geen telelens: 'what you see is what you get'.
Gedigitaliseerd is alles mogelijk, zelfs totdat de emulsie op het negatief tot korrels wordt uitvergroot.
Dat komt nog, maar geleidelijk aan.
Er zit een verhaal aan vast, maar dat moet nog even groeien.
Voor zover ik heb kunnen nagaan is het de enige foto van dit vliegtuig
in zijn configuratie terwijl het bezig is met zijn taak.

Een opmerkelijk negatief.
De inleiding is wat lang geworden.
Even doorbijten graag.
Het is voorjaar 1941. Engeland.
Enys House om precies te zijn, bij Falmouth in het Zuid Westen.Een groep adelborsten van het KIM in Den Helder was het jaar er vóór per schip overgestoken naar de UK in een goed gecoördineerde actie.
Ze vervolgen nu hun officiersopleiding, zij het in verkorte vorm en vooral praktijk gericht.
Er is namelijk een oorlog aan de gang.

Onze fotograaf is Ad Hoppener, adelborst Technische Dienst, in zijn laatste opleidingsjaar. Hij had leren zweven op Teuge in '38, wilde graag vlieger worden, maar dat lukte hem pas na de oorlog.
Hij weet tot op heden nog steeds niet waarom hij -toen het er om spande- niet werd toegelaten tot de vliegopleiding.
Het bloed kruipt waar het niet gaan kan, en ondanks een beperkt aantal rolletjes film bestaat hij het om meerdere wolkenluchten te fotograferen!

Op 1 juni '41 zit het er op en wordt de groep naar Schotland gestuurd. Naar Greenock aan de River Clyde, bij Glasgow.
Ze worden ingescheept op de Jacob van Heemskerck, een lichte kruiser, die daar met nog een paar Nederlandse schepen actief is.
Het is de z.g. 'bootjesreis', een vorm van stage lopen.
Het hield toen wél in dat ze midden in een enorme Navy oorlogs industrie terecht kwamen.

Een bewijs daarvoor is het CAM-schip met Hurricane op de rocket rail.
Dat ziet hij op 5 juni en had geen idee van de opzet.
Dat was logisch want het CAM concept verkeerde toen nog in een experimenteel stadium.
In zijn nauwkeurig bijgehouden foto-log schrijft hij:
"5/6 '41 Koopvaarder met kattepultvliegtuig".

Hun bootjesreis betekende ook deelname aan konvooi WS9C in juli.
WS9C had de schone taak het Engelse Malta te voorzien van broodnodige voorraden.
En dat was allerminst zonder gevaar!
WS stond toen voor 'Winston Special'.

Na dat avontuur en nog zo wat werd het groepje TD'ers eind augustus '41 geplaatst op de van Kinsbergen, een Artillerie-instructieschip met een crew van rond 200.
Het hoorde thuis op Curaçao, maar was voor onderhoud en vooral 'de-gaussing', het ongevoelig maken voor magnetische mijnen, tijdelijk in Greenock.
Daar werd dus voor heen en weer gevaren terwijl 'Das Boot' overal op de loer lag!
Het moest terug voor zijn taak om in zijn dooie eentje de hele Caraïbische wateren te beschermen tegen U-boten.
Het schip zou, met bemanning, pas vele jaren later terug keren.
Onze regering hield er vreemde, en onmogelijke taakstellingen op na, gedreven door geldgebrek.
Men vertrok op 6 september '41, zeer vroeg in de ochtend, vanuit een steenkolenrook-smoggy Greenock.
De eerste bestemming was Bermuda, 2800 mijl verder op in een onbetrouwbare Atlantic.

Zonder incidenten komen ze daar 8 dagen later aan.
Nu, 70 jaar later, verzucht de oude Hoppener nóg dat de opluchting groot was!
Ze werden daar tegemoet gevaren door de zeesleper 'Rode Zee', Hollands Glorie, die tijdig uit nederland was ontsnapt.
Via St Maarten, voor een korte stop, vaart men door naar Suriname.
Dat lag behoorlijk uit de route, maar was van belang als vlagvertoon voor (of tegen) de Amerikanen, die daar al een duizend man gestationeerd hadden vanwege het veilig stellen van de bauxit mijnen.
Nederland maakte zich zorgen over eventuele annexatie er van; het was ze door de strot geduwd...
Let wel, Pearl Harbor moest nog plaats vinden, Amerika deed officieel niet mee...
Het vlagvertoon op de Suriname rivier verliep vredig, uiteraard.
De S.B.M. was nog formeel in Nederlandse handen en men maakte meerdere uitstappen, goed gemutst, en altijd ergens voorzien van gratis bier.
Die oorlog viel daar wel mee...

Men borrelde een afscheids party op de rivier, met uitzicht op de tot zinken gebrachte Duitse Goslar.
Die ligt daar tot op heden nog steeds op zijn kant.

Het is een lang verhaal aan het worden, maar maar m.i. nodig om de uiteindelijke foto in te kleden, en gewoon ook omdat ik het verhaal eens kwijt wil...
Maar dan moet er eerst naar Curaçao gevaren worden.
Dat gebeurt op 8 october en drie dagen later komt de Tafelberg op Curaçao in zicht.
Men is thuis voor de komende paar jaren!

Dan, op die elfde october 1941 ziet de zweefvlieger zijn eerste vlíegende vliegtuig, na de Hurricane op het CAM schip.
Hij had al een maand het zwerk afgezocht, vruchtenloos.
Zijn luchtvaart-hart bonkt!
Hij ziet een Fokker F XVIII, en concludeert dat het de Snip moet zijn.
Die was er in '34 met veel tam tam naar toe gevlogen.
Zijn logje vermeldt: 11/10 '41 "De Snip" verwelkomt ons.

Maar die Snip verwelkomde helemaal niet.
Hij kwam niet even laag, prettig op brughoogte langs, als eerbetoon aan dit 'enige varende machtsvertoon voor de komende jaren'!
Nee, hij verdween eenvoudig aan de einder...
Vandaar dat er maar één enkele foto is gemaakt van de zilveren vogel.
Wat de adelborst niet wist was dat het de Snip niet was....
En ik ook niet, totdat ik het negatief scande, behoorlijk zwaar, een jaar geleden.
Ik raakte op mijn beurt wat opgewonden bij het uitvergroten van 'de Snip' :
Er waren vreemde hobbels op zijn rug zichtbaar, en er stak ook nog wat onder de romp uit.

Er was een donkerder gekleurd richtingsroer, afstekend tegen het kielvlak,
en een donkere driehoek met de punt naar beneden zichtbaar op de romp zijkant!
Dit was géén Snip!
Het was een militair geworden object en kon niet anders zijn dan de andere Fokker XVIII in de West, n.l. de Oriol.
Dat maakt het op hoogte doorvliegen van -nu dus de Oriol- des te onbegrijpelijker.
Je zou toch verwachten dat je als enig vliegtuig -dat de Cariben moet verkennen en verdedigen- onmiddellijk jezelf naar beneden stort op het moment dat je voor de eerste keer het enige schip -dat de Cariben moet verkennen en verdedigen- in het vizier krijgt.
Nota bene wapenbroeders voor de komende jaren...
Kennelijk was de burger bemanning van de Fokker nog té burger om dat spel te spelen!
In oorsprong was dat de PH AIO, Oehoe, in '35 verscheept naar Curaçao.
Na een maand was het al mis, en de zwaar beschadigde Oehoe werd in stilte heen naar Fokker en weer terug naar Curaçao verscheept.
De Antilliaanse bevolking moest niets meer hebben van de naam Oehoe, er was gebleken ongeluk aan te kleven, en trouwens, waarom zou je een vogel benoemen die niemand op het eiland ooit gezien had?
Het werd Oriol, de kunuku Wielewaal, die kende men wél, en PH werd PJ.
Ik heb me laten vertellen dat deze foto tot op heden de enige is waar de bewapende, militaire Oriol, vliegend op te zien is.
En dat nu geeft me het idee dat het een speciale plek in neemt in het Nederlands Burger/Militair Luchtvaart foto archief.
Mijn lange verhaal heb ik hiermee verantwoord, hoop ik.
Van de vele scans die ik er van heb gemaakt zal ik er een aantal tonen.
Daarmee verval ik wat in herhaling, maar ik heb geprobeerd er alles uit te halen, al of niet in kleur, met verschillende belichtingen, totdat de emulsie op het negatief alles had vrij gegeven wat mogelijk was.
De romp lijkt altijd optisch wat te slank te zijn, maar dat heeft te maken met het feit dat de wat bolle bovenzijde van de romp het van boven komende zonlicht weerkaatst, en daardoor minder zichtbaar is.
Op de vleugelvoorrand heeft het juist een mooi effect door de andere licht-invalshoek.
Eind '41 was er dus precies één vliegtuig onder militair beheer dat het gehele Caraïbisch gebied moest bevliegen, en bij het vinden van een U-boot deze vanaf de rug moest bestoken met een Lewis mitrailleur, en er vervolgens door een gat in de romp-bodem haar bommenlast over uit te strooien.
Dat waren allesvernietigende bommen van wel 8 kg per stuk....
Gelukkig werd het begin '42 beter qua militaire luchtvloot op Curaçao.
Dat is te zien na de reeks Oriol foto's.

Dit zijn de Oriolen die er toe doen in eerste instantie.
Er zijn meer scans, vooral zwaarder, maar die leveren niet veel meer op.
Vervolg, maar dat is korter gehouden....
Een opmerkelijk negatief.
Voor opleidingsdoeleinden, zoals patrouilleren en blindvliegen, werden er begin '42 door de Staat 2(!) Piper Cubs aangeschaft.
Ze werden onder gebracht bij de Curaçao Aeroclub.
Je moest echter wél militair zijn om er in te mogen vliegen of 'waarnemen'.
Wat dat betreft was er eind vijftiger jaren nog niets veranderd m.b.t. sleep-Tigers en -Pipers op De Kooy en Valkenburg, en ik neem aan ook op de KLU velden.
Ze waren donker gespoten en voorzien van de kentekens P1 en P2 op het kielvlak.
Op de romp was aan weerszijden een witte liggende rechthoek aangebracht, waarvan de betekenis en het doel me niet bekend is.
Er werd lustig mee rond het eiland gevlogen.
De waakzaamheid, waar het de vijand betrof, was er enorm mee toe genomen...
De jonge adelborst Hoppener was inmiddels beëdigd tot Luitenant ter zee en was van zijn nieuwe salaris gaan sportvliegen.
Hij heeft in die tijd niet meer gefotografeerd omdat zijn nieuwe hobby filmen was geworden.
Dat is aan een kant jammer omdat foto's aanzienlijk beter ogen dan de uitvergrote 8 mm, effectief 5X5 mm beeldjes van een film.
Het zijn wél de enige beeldjes van een vliegende P1, op patrouille langs het eiland, een paar slechts, en een landing op het dirt-stripje dat Hato toen was.
Kortom, beelden van ons militair machtsvertoon in de Cariben tijdens WW2.
