Is dit een foto na de overrompeling van de republiek en gevangeneming van Soekarno in 1948 tijdens de 2e politionele actie?

    Standaard de Havilland DH-86

The De Havilland DH-86 was a 10 passenger aircraft built against Qantas specifications.
One was used by Indonesia. The aircraft was formerly operated by British Airways as G-ADYH and had, after having been disposed of by British Airways, been used by Intercontinental Airways for migrant charters to Australia. In March 1948 it was in Darwin where, due to changes in the migrant charters arrangements, it remained until purchased by J. Grigware on 13 April 1948. Grigware, a US citizen, operated from Manilla. He flew the aircraft to Singapore and eventually abandoned it at Penang on 19 May 1948. It is suspected that this was intention as the aircraft was taken over by the Indonesians, using a pilot named Donati as the pilot. It must have been flown with the British registration as the Indonesian registration RI-008 was not applied until October 1948. The aircraft was captured by Dutch forces on Maguwo on 19 December 1948 and was flown to Andir. Its subsequent fate is not known.

    Standaard RI-001

Well, there is a long story associated with RI-001. It was assigned to a Douglas C-47 which has achieved almost mythical status in Indonesia.
The first mention of a flight of an aircraft registered as RI-001 was on 21 September 1947, flying from Manilla to Maguwo. This may have been a different aircraft from the one referred to below. It has been suggested that the registration RI-001 was originally intended for a presidential aircraft.
Thw aircraft was originally registered as VR-HEC and was registered in the name of Lad M. Moore. Its previous identity was 43-49642. Based on Dutch intelligence reports it appears that the aircraft had been chartered by the Indonesian authorities before. On 14 October 1948 it was purchased by Indonesian Airways with 20 kg of gold donated by the people of Aceh to Sukarno during a tour of Sumatra. It was used for a flight from Rangoon to maguwo on 3 November 1948. On 18 November 1948 it flew Hatta to Sumatra and flew from there to Rangoon, arriving on 21 November 1948. On 14 November 1948 it flew from Rangoon to Calcutta with a number of passengers.
It has been suggested that RI-001 was parked at Maguwo when the Dutch forces captured this airport on 19 December 1948 and was taken over by the Dutch but this cannot be substantiated from Dutch reports and seems to be contradictory to its subsequent history when, named Seulawah, it was based in Rangoon after having returned from Calcutta on 26 January 1949. From there it flew under charter to the Burmese government during 1949 and part of 1950. The revenue from these charter flights provided enough money to buy another two aircraft and hire more pilots and staff. It is highly likely that these were the aircraft registered as RI-007 and RI-009.

Aircraft RI-001 was flown by the American Carl Wiss as well as the Indonesian Sumardjono. Wiss was an American who had flown the hump and who, after the war stayed with CNAC flying C-46 aircraft. Following a crash in January 1948 he left CNAC, presumably to fly for the Indonesians in Rangoon. He lived until the 1990s.
Other former Hump and CNAC pilots involved in the operations of Indonesian Airways were Americans Len Parish, Jim Maupin and Bob Pottschmidt who made several flights between Burma and Yogyakarta. The three continued to work for the AURI after 1950. Other American pilots included Bernard Kuhlmeier, Vhad Brown, Don Bussart and James Tate.
Following his early involvement with Indonesian Airways, Lad Moore continued to serve the AURI as a chief advisor until 1952, with a short break in 1951. In this function, whilst based in Bandung, he instructed Indonesian pilots on C-47s as well as fighter planes. He returned to the US where he passed away on 22 July 1956.

Over the years there have been a number of DC-3s with the registration RI-001 in Indonesia, either in a flying condition or as a display.
The original RI-001 was c/n 26903, ex VR-HEC. It went to the AURI in August 1950 but it is not known what serial it received in AURI service. It is believged to have been lost in the fifties.

From January 1994 to September 2001 an AURI aircraft, AF-4775 was flown as RI-001. This aircraft had former identities 45-0965, NZ3557, VH-MMO, ZK-AOH, PK-VTM and PK-NDG. It has been suggested that this aircraft operated at one stage from Pondok Cabe and was later located at Halim. Its current status is not known.

The RI-001 on display at the TNI Satriamandala museum in Jakarta was formerly PK-GDZ (as is seen from the underwing markings) which was originally ML-KNIL DT-991 and was also registered, at some time as PK-RCI, PK-DPK and AURI’s T-491. Its c/n was 12514.

The RI-001 on display at the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah site has not been identified. This aircraft is, however, marked ‘Indonesia Airways’, rather than ‘Indonesian Airways’.

A RI-001 has been reported in display in Bandar Aceh. Its identity as well its status after the 2005 tsunamic disaster, is not known.

Some reference source has suggested that there was a RI-001 on display in Padang. Based on reports there was no such aircraft on display in 2006.

Jos, you can read Dutch, can't you? Prima informatie.

The Indonesian forces operated two Avro Ansons which had been purchased with gold collected in Bukittingi, on Sumatra. Bukittingi was the hometown of Indonesian Vice-President Mohammed Hatta.

The first of these has been associated with the registration RI-003 and carried previously the Australian registration VH-BBY. One reference source has linked VH-BBY to the registration RI-001 but this is most probably incorrect. VH-BBY was formerly RAF AX505 and was operated by Queensland Aerial Ambulance & Taxi Services before being acquired by Air Traders and exported to Thailand. Although some sources suggest that it was obtained by Indonesia in September 1947, other sources state that H. Keegan flew it to Thailand and Singapore in December 1947, following which it was chartered by the Indonesian authorities. According to some sources the aircraft arrived in Singapore on 1 December 1947 and was refused to fly to Palembang. However, the aircraft later received approval to fly to Bangkok via Penang and Mergui. The aircraft left Singapore on 5 December 1947 but the aircraft did not fly to Penang but instead landed at Bukti Tinggi where it was taken over by Indonesia. The non-arrival at Penang caused the RAF to undertake a mission on 6 December 1947 to search for the missing aircraft.

As part of the charter Keegan flew the aircraft from Singapore to Bukittingi and took part in the first operational flight from Bukkittingi to Singora in Burma on 10 December 1947. On this flight Keegan was joined by Lt. Col. Iswanjudi as co-pilot whilst carrying passengers. In Singora, two Indonesian pilots, Iswanjudi and Halim Perdanakusuma, took over the aircraft and flew back to Bukittinggi on 14 December 1947. On the way the aircraft crashed at Tanjung Hentu, Malaysia in a monsoon storm, killing the Indonesian crew. Keegan later joined Queensland Airlines and crashed on 10 March 1949 in Bilinga, Queensland whilst flying Lockheed Lodestar VH-BAG.

TNI-AU publications include an excellent photo of RI-003. Based on the above history this, rather clear, photo should have been made sometime between 10 December and 14 December 1947 using another aircraft. The photo shows some vague former markings resembling F MW as well as an extended gun turret. Indeed there exists an image of an aircraft marked F MW (serial K6285), which represents an aircraft that served with the 321st Squadron of the RAF, a squadron manned by Dutch naval personnel and operating Avro Ansons in the European theatre of war until disbanded on 18 January 1941. This squadron was reformed in March 1942 and, eventually, operated the MLD Consolidated Liberators that were used in the NEI.
RAF aircraft AX505, on the other hand, was an Anson Mk.1, part of a batch of which most were used by the Empire Air Training Scheme. The photo’s origin is further implicated as another TNI-AU reference has a picture of a trio of Rockwell Bronco’s flying against an identical background landscape as on the RI-003 photo whilst, in the same publication, there is a photo of RI-003, but this time so heavily retouched that it is obviously not real and with the RI-003 registration is shown in a different typeface.
Because of the time of its use (December 1947) it is possible that the aircraft registered as VH-BBY never received a RI registration and that the RI-003 registration was a later ‘invention’ in an effort to enhance historical records.

An Avro Anson is displayed in Bukittingi as RI-003 but this is believed to be a replica.

Another Avro Anson (type XIX) was registered as RI-004 and was bought from Wade Palmer who also flew the aircraft. It was formerly known as RAF W2473 and had been operated by Airlines of WA as VH-AGX before it was exported to Singapore on 26 March 1948 and was acquired byF.W. Morgan. It has been reported as flying from Sumatra to Singora on 3 June 1948 with Wade Palmer as pilot and another three Indonesian crew members.
On 20 July 1948 it was acquired by the Indonesian government and registered as RI-004. It made some regular flights between Maguwo and Maospati before being grounded by mechanical problems. It has also been suggested it made flights to Thailand. It was found by Dutch forces when they captured Maguwo on 19 December 1948. It is believed it was subsequently broken up. Some reference sources link this aircraft to VH-BBY. Note that the registration VH-AGX was later re-used for a Lockheed Hudson.

    Beste Jan Wullink,

    Vriendelijke groet

    Maarten Hartkamp
