Mooie plaatjes Jan!
The Dornier Do-18 Wal was a flying boat that flew for the first time on 15 March 1935.
From 1926 to 1931 the MLD acquired a total of 40 Dornier Wal seaplanes. The first five, with serials D-1/5, were built by SAI Costruzione Mechaniche Aeronautiche at Marina di Pisa, with the remainder (D-6/40) constructed by Aviolanda. In addition six Wal Fs were procured in 1931 and 1932 from Aviolanda with serials D-41/46.
All aircraft were deployed in the NEI except D-22 which was written off at Basrah on 2 May 1929, during the delivery flight.
Other crashes included D-2 (prior to January 1935), D-6 (24 August 1928 at Morokrembangan), D-8 (prior to January 1935), D-10 (27 December 1937 at Ambon), D-29 (14 April 1932 at Soerabaja) and D-36 (14 August 1939 at Mapia).
The other aircraft were withdrawn from use at Morokrembangan in 1939 and 1940 except for D-41, D-43, D-44, D-45 and D-46 which remained operational until they were rendered inoperable at Morokrembangan between 3 and 5 February 1942 as they did not have the range to evacuate to Australia.
