'144669'. de Havilland Canada DHC-3 (US Navy: UC-1A, later U-1B) Otter. Purchased for use in Operation Deep Freeze in Antarctica. '144669' (MSN 148) assigned to VX-6.
The US Navy purchased 16 UC-1 aircraft for use in Operation Deep Freeze in Antarctica. Those remaining in service on 18 September 1962 were redesignated as U-1B.
In 1965 the Comite Antarctique Belgo Neerlandais (Belgisch-Nederlandse Zuidpool Expeditie) was loaned '144669' from the US Navy, and it was transferred to them in 1967. It was registered as OO-HAD. It crashed at the South African SANAE Station in the Antarctic on 9 February 1970 and was a complete write off, as well as all the expensive scientific equipment on board. Some parts were recovered and used in the restoration of its twin-brother OO-SUD in the Royal Army Museum in Brussels.
Groet, Ruud.
