The “Dumbo” SAR Program: The SB-17G series (initially designated B-17H) carried the massive, Higgins-designed A-1 lifeboat. The boat was dropped by parachutes and was equipped with rations, survival gear, and motors to reach distressed pilots in the water.
Visual Profile: To accomodate these specialised duties, the SB-17G had its chin and ball turrets removed and replaced with a prominent radar radome for tracking life rafts and spotted downed personnel. (Source: Internet)

slecht te zien op de foto maar het toestel heeft twee tegengesteld draaiende, in elkaar grijpende driebladige hoofdrotoren. Later door Kaman gebruikt systeem maar dan met 2 bladige rotors.

Dank je wel Trudy. Het is inderdaad bevredigend als een draadje in de smaak valt. Dat maakt de hoeveelheid werk dat er voor nodig is weer goed als je nagaat dat er voor dit draadje nu al 994 foto's door mij zijn bewerkt en geplaatst.

En afgelopen nacht is dit draadje de 2.1 miljoen keer bekeken gepasseerd.

4/4/67: TOS USAF and assigned to the 63rd Military Airlift Wing, Norton AFB, CA. Was first aircraft to touch down in Hanoi to bring POWs home Feb 12, 1973 Named "Hanoi Taxi". The Hanoi Taxi flew two missions into Hanoi, carrying out 78 POWs and two civilian returnees to the Philippines, and four missions from the Philippines to the United States, carrying 76 ex-POWs.
Ca 1981. Converted to C-141B. Named "City of San Bernadino" with 63rd MAW in Mar 1988. 1994: 89th Airlift Squadron, 445th Airlift Wing at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH.
Circa 1997: Converted to C-141C. Mar 12, 1998, carried 50 former POWs to festivities in Operation Homecoming Silver Anniversary. 2002: Received its final programmed depot maintenance, and it was repainted as it appeared when it went to Hanoi in 1973 -- except for the Red Cross. It flew in these markings for the next four years.
May 2004: Maj. Gen. Edward J. Mechenbier, himself a POW repatriated from Vietnam, flew it back to Vietnam to repatriate the remains of two American service members killed in action.
2005: Used to help evacuate people affected by Hurricane Katrina.
5/6/06: Made the last flight of a C-141 in USAF service when it landed at the Air Force Museum. Handed over to USAFM May 6, 2006. (Source: Joe Baugher†)

265406 (42-65406). MSN 13917. Douglas C-74 Globemaster I. Reserialled CA406 during testing. First flight Nov. 27, 1949. Reverted back to 42-65406.
It was structurally converted to serve as the prototype for the massive YC-124 Globemaster II.
Fitted with R-4360-49 engines with 4-bladed props. Retrofitted with radome and wing heaters before being turned over to USAF for active service.
It was displayed at Wright Field as 42-65406 and was eventually scrapped after being used for fire-fighting training practice.
It is the only C-124 fitted with Curtiss Electric four-blade props which was a carry over from the C-74.
